Annette Bening stars in a new interpretation of Euripides’ classic about the passionate and destructive affair between the mortal Greek hero Jason and the mystical and exotic Medea. Lenka Udovicki, who has directed theater and opera around the world, incorporates classical elements, such as a 12-woman chorus and on-stage musicians, into this stylized modern staging produced by UCLA Live. Written for an Athenian audience that was at the height of its Golden Age, “Medea” remains a potent critique of power.

CREATIVE MUSIC FESTIVAL
In celebration of the inaguration of the Herb Alpert School of Music at CalArts

REDCAT

Sat Sept 20 | 8:30 pm
Music and Video
The Golden Quintet
Lian Ensemble

"Wadada Leo Smith spans everything. He is lyrical, intense, soaring, powerful, meditative, hard, soft, deep..." All About Jazz

This season’s edition of the storied CalArts creative music revue brings one of the most formidable lineups in the festival’s history. Trumpeter, composer, improviser and festival founder Wadada Leo Smith leads two different ensembles: his Golden Quintet, with Vijay Iyer (piano), John Lindberg (bass), and Pheeroan akLaff and Famoudou Don Moye (drums, percussion), and the Silver Orchestra, which performs with Thomas Buckner (baritone), Vinny Golia (winds), Vicki Ray (piano), Mark Menzies (violin), and Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick (cello). The genre-defying pianist, composer and improviser Anthony Davis returns with a new iteration of his 1980s ensemble Episteme, featuring Earl Howard (synthesizer and saxophone), Mark Dresser (bass), J.D. Parran (reeds), Cynthia Aaronson-Davis (soprano) and Jonah Davis (vocals). The festival also includes one of the leading creative forces from Iran, the Sufi tradition-inspired Lian Ensemble, with Houman Pourmehdi (tonbak, daf, ney, vocals), Mahshid Mirzadeh (santur), Mani Bolouri (kamanche, gheychak, vocals), Amir Koushkani (tar, vocals) Pirayeh Pourafar (tar, vocals) and Siamak Shajarian (Vocal).

Completing the program is pianist, organist, gospel singer, composer and improviser Amina Claudine Myers, a longtime stalwart of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. She plays in a trio with Don Pate (bass) and Reggie Nicholson (drums), accompanied by Paul Berkolds and the CalArts Choir. Curated by Wadada Leo Smith.

Philoktetes

Dates:

Friday, April 11, 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, April 12, 3:00 and 8:00 p.m.
Sunday, April 13, 3:00 p.m.
Location: Getty Villa, Auditorium

Director Michael Hackett and Olivier Award-winning British actor Henry Goodman collaborate to bring Sophocles' great meditation on war, honor, and the nature of truth, Philoktetes, to the Getty Villa's Theater Lab series.

Originally performed in 409 B.C., the twenty-second year of the Peloponnesian War, Philoktetes won first prize at the Festival of Dionysius, the most important theatrical festival in ancient Greece. It is the tenth year of the Trojan War and the Greeks are at standstill—the war is dragging on endlessly. By a prophecy they learn that, in order to win, they must have Philoktetes' magical bow and arrows. But nine years before, the Greeks had abandoned Philoktetes, wounded, on a deserted island. Returning to the island, Odysseus determines to trick Philoktetes. His accomplice in deception is the idealistic soldier Neoptolemus, the young son of the dead Achilles.

The play poses the question of whether it is ever justifiable to act against ethical codes in order to achieve a higher good.

Persian musical heritage melds with the contemporary sensibilities of postmodern jazz in the programs of this group. Combining a unique musical vision with dauntless dedication to experimentation, they create an innovative, mystical synthesis of world music featuring traditional Persian instruments such as the tar (lute), santur (zither), and tonbak (goblet drum). “The devotional approach of this excellent ensemble, with their imaginative arrangements of complex Sufi texts, all executed in a refined yet virtuosic manner that never lost momentum, contributed to the feeling of elation that accompanied me many hours and days after this concert.” — Eyal Hareuveni, allaboutjazz.com Best World Music / Recombinant Artist — LAWMA 2004 & 2005 • “Absolutely soulful” — Jim Brenholts, author of “Tracks Across the Universe

The world-renowned Lian Ensemble will unite with USC scholars and mystic-poetry enthusiasts Behrokh Khoshnevis, Mansour Rahimi and Elahe Nezami to share a powerful message of mystical love as embodied in the lyric poetry of thirteenth-century mystics.

The Lian Ensemble is a group of virtuoso performers and composers who fuse mystical Persian music with the contemporary sensibilities of postmodern jazz. Combining a unique musical vision with dauntless dedication to experimentation, they create a synthesis of mystical world music composed of traditional and folk melodies and instruments.

Through concert and conversation, the evening will demonstrate the ways in which scholarship, performance, spirituality, creativity and philosophy come together, transcend boundaries and influence academic, personal and cultural spheres. USC students will be personally engaged in creating the sounds and syllables of the performance along with the artists and members of the USC faculty, creating a public display of Persian cultural values and heritage. Scholars will explain the history of Sufism, the philosophy of the Jalal al-Din Rumi, the importance of Rumi’s work in the Eastern world and the popularity of his translations in the West. Used throughout time to protest oppression and exalt in the divine, the music and recitation of poetry dramatically display the ways in which art and humanity are inextricably bound.

Shirin Ebadi, Winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize
for Peace & Lian Ensemble"

"To live is to love, and to love is to live. There is no virtue higher than love. In love lies the salvation of all beings."
Rumi
Shirin Ebadi is the first Iranian and the first Muslim
woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. A lawyer
and human rights activist who served in the 1970s
as one of the first female judges in Iran. She has
displayed great personal courage as a lawyer defending
individuals and groups who have fallen victim to a
powerful political and legal system that is legitimized
through an inhumane interpretation of Islam.

Based in Los Angeles, Lian Ensemble is a group of
virtuoso performers and composers who perform
mystical world music. This ensemble has had a
profound impact on Persian music, introducing the
world to a plethora of new music and compositions
by several of very best of the contemporary Persian
musicians. The Los Angeles times (Don Hecman) writes,
"Lian Ensemble is a gifted group with completive
compositions and virtuosic performances".

Lian Ensemble in Concert "Love" & "Heart" Persian Sufi Music VENUE : Wilshire Ebell Theatre DATE : Saturday, March 8, 2003 TIME : 8:00 PM This concert celebrates the mystic voice of love and longing for union with the divine through music. In Sufi terminology "love" and "heart" can note something higher than "love" and "heart" of conventional usage. Since the true beauty of the Sufi meaning of these words can only be hinted at, poetry is one of the best mediums for presenting a clarification of such expressions. In this concert Persian mystical poets such as Rumi, Attar, and Nurbakhsh, shed light on a better understanding of "love" and "heart" from the Sufi point of view.
