David Johnson

David Johnson, percussionist and mallet player lives in Los Angeles and teaches at the California Institute of the Arts. As a percussionist, he has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, the Long Beach Symphony, the Santa Barbara Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the San Francisco Spring Opera, the Western Opera Theater, The Cabrillo Festival and the Berkshire Music Center Orchestra. He has performed with conductors Pierre Boulez, Seji Ozawa, Andre Previn, George Benjamin, Simon Rattle and Esa Pekka Solonen. He has had a long and extensive career performing contemporary chamber music. In the mid-1970’s he was a member of the now historic Blackearth Percussion Group. The group was one of the first full time percussion groups devoted to premiering new works and was instrumental in introducing repertoire such as the John Cage “Third Construction” into the mainstream of percussion ensemble literature. In California David has performed extensively at the Monday Evening Concerts at the LA County Museum of Art, the Ojai Festival, the Cabrillo Festival, the Independent Composers Association, the L.A. Arts Festival, the L.A./Sitka Chamber Music Festival, Composers Inc., the L.A. Philharmonic New Music Group and the California Ear Unit. David has been the percussionist with the chamber group XTET since 1987, and the New Century Players since 1991. As a marimba and vibraphone player, he has played with the Kim Richmond Jazz Orchestra, the Bruce Lofgren Band, the Vinny Golia LargeEnsemble, Mel Torme, Dave Brubeck, Maureen McGovern and Yusef Lateef. For the pastfew years he has been performing and recording with the Lian Ensemble, a group of Persian and American musicians performing new and traditional Persian music with marimba. David is also currently playing with Just Strings, an ensemble dedicated to microtonal music. Just Strings under the direction of John Schneider is designing, building and performing the music of Harry Partch. David is also the percussionist and marimba player with Roger Williams and co-leads the Dark Wing Trio with Ivan Johnson and Houman Pourmehdi. David works occasionally in the recording industry and has worked in AFM film orchestras for The American President, Fantasia 2000, the Glass House, Head Above Water, Hush, In Too Deep, Invaders From Mars, Lolly Madonna XXX, Murder at 1600, Nick Of Time, Rapid Fire, Redwood Curtain, a Reflection of Fear, Rounders, the Scarecrow, Seaquest DSV, Set It Off, slight Case of Murder, Species, SweetNovember, Swordfish, Tiny Toons, Urban Legend, the Vagrant, Virtuosity, XXX and the Martix. David has given artist/clinician appearances at the University of Southern California, Claremont College, Ithaca College, University of Kentucky, University of Oregon, Western Washington State University, Portland State University, Michigan State University, and California State University in Sacramento. He has performed three times at the Northwest Percussion Festival and was a featured clinician at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in1997. He was the winner of the 1995 Percussive Arts Society composition competition for ”Quartz City” for vibraphone soloist and percussion quintet and has been on the faculty of the California Institute of the Arts since 1991.
